Ocotillo
Adobe-toned plaster, clay-tile hip roofs and a zaguán gate into a fountain courtyard shaded by a timber portal.
The house
Ocotillo follows the old haciendas of Tucson and northern Sonora: rooms in a ring around a court, deep walls, small windows to the heat and the street, generous doors to the shade. Hip roofs with 18-inch eaves shade the walls; the courtyard and the portal make a cool room that is used more than any other in the house.
- Zaguán entry
- Timber portal
- Great room under vigas
- Primary wing and casita study
- Rear motor court

Code basis · Arizona
This plan was drawn to:
- 2024 IRC as adopted (Phoenix 2024 PBCC; Tucson 2024 IRC eff. 1/1/2026); Scottsdale 2021 IRC
- 2024 IECC (Phoenix, Pima County) / 2021 IECC (Scottsdale) — Climate Zone 2B
Arizona leaves residential code adoption to cities and counties, so the IRC edition and amendments vary between Phoenix, Tucson, Scottsdale and rural counties. Check the edition your building department enforces.
Before you build. Halden plans are design documents. Depending on where you build, your jurisdiction may require structural design, energy compliance, a site plan, or a seal from a design professional or engineer licensed in your state. A local professional should review and adapt the set to your lot, soils and adopted code. We don't guarantee compliance with local zoning, covenants or setbacks.
