Tierra
Eighteen-inch rammed-earth walls, a walled courtyard with a plunge pool, and a gallery that walks you through the shade.
The house
Tierra borrows the logic of the Sonoran pueblo — thick walls, small openings to the heat, generous openings to shade — and builds it with contemporary stabilized rammed earth. The strata in the walls come from the local soil and are left exposed inside and out. From the street it is a quiet composition of earth walls and one deep door; behind them is the courtyard, the pool and the shade.
- Courtyard first
- A gallery of light
- Great room with a light monitor
- Walls that work
- Sized for real lots

Code basis · Arizona
This plan was drawn to:
- 2024 IRC as adopted (Phoenix 2024 PBCC; Tucson 2024 IRC eff. 1/1/2026); Scottsdale 2021 IRC
- 2024 IECC (Phoenix, Pima County) / 2021 IECC (Scottsdale) — Climate Zone 2B
- Rammed earth: alternative material/method approval (IRC R104) with engineered design
Arizona leaves residential code adoption to cities and counties, so the IRC edition and amendments vary between Phoenix, Tucson, Scottsdale and rural counties. Check the edition your building department enforces.
Before you build. Halden plans are design documents. Depending on where you build, your jurisdiction may require structural design, energy compliance, a site plan, or a seal from a design professional or engineer licensed in your state. A local professional should review and adapt the set to your lot, soils and adopted code. We don't guarantee compliance with local zoning, covenants or setbacks.
